Ribbon cutting for new community center in Davis Park

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — A new community space is now open in Lexington’s Davis Park neighborhood, and city leaders hope it will provide valuable resources and positive opportunities for local families.

Mayor Linda Gorton joined members of the Lexington Community Land Trust on Thursday for a ribbon cutting at the new community center on Deroode Street. The project was developed as part of the ongoing revitalization efforts in the area.

Byron Mitchell, President of the Lexington Community Land Trust Board, says the center could make a real difference for neighborhood youth.

“Kids say they don’t have nothing to do. They don’t have nothing to do, so a lot of them say they get in a situation or they get in some trouble, which is there’s nothing for them to do. So, to have a community center to have a lot of activities for them, that keeps them out of a whole lot of things,” Mitchell said.

Officials praised the new center as a vital asset for Davis Park residents, offering a safe space for programming, outreach, and community gatherings.
