Reward Offered In Highway Copper Thefts

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is teaming up with state police to put an end to a string of copper thefts along highways in Kentucky.

The Transportation Cabinet believes thieves have cost them 2 million dollars in the last 4 years by taking the copper wire out of the highway’s lighting system.

Police said 37 different areas have been hit just this year, mainly along I-64 and I-75.

Deputy State Highway Engineer Nancy Albright said, "This is a safety issue. Highway lights are out there for a reason. They make a big difference when you’re trying to navigate an interstate interchange at night, particularly in a place you’re not familiar with."

The Transportation Cabinet has offered a reward up to $2,500 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the copper thieves.

Police said they are working with metal recycling businesses across Kentucky so they know to report any suspicious copper wire sellers.

Police believe the thieves are operating between midnight and 4 a.m. near interchanges.

They ask if you see people working out of an unmarked van or truck during these times to contact them.
