Representative who won by one vote is sworn-in

FRANKFORT, Ky. (WTVQ) – Kentucky’s General Assembly is back in session with plenty of work to do on the public pension system and more.

Before lawmakers can get to work, they have to figure out what to do about a representative-elect who won by one vote.

Democrat Jim Glenn defeated Republican incumbent D.J. Johnson in Daviess County.

About 10 minutes before the session began, Jim Glenn made an entrance with supporters surrounding him, shouting let him sit and every vote counts.

When he entered the room, he treated the seat as his own.

He was sworn-in, but that wasn’t the end.

The House Speaker announced an election contest board will look into the situation.

It is made up of nine House members.

Glenn says he is frustrated by the decision and believes that he won his spot in the House.

Some other legislators feel the same way.

“Jim Glenn won by one vote. It doesn’t matter if it was one or one thousand. He was selected by the people of Daviess County and to come to chamber and try to take that away is wrong,” said Rep. Rocky Adkins, House Minority Leader.

“We’re going to follow the Constitution. Mr. Glenn will be seated today so that will be the case but then the process will continue and you’ll see that throughout the session,” said Rep. John Carney, House Majority Leader.

One legislator tried to make a motion to move this to the Judiciary Committee.

The House Speaker said that was out of order.

D.J. Johnson did not want to comment until after the process plays out.
