City announces $100,000 grant aimed at decreasing youth violence

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) — For the past few years, the number of homicides, and the numbers on gun violence, have gone down in Lexington.

“In 2022, Lexington had 44 homicides, compared to 24 last year,” Mayor Linda Gorton said.

For the first time in five years, the city had less than 100 shootings. In order to keep the trend in a downward direction, the city plans to allocate $100,000 to support One Lexington’s Gun Violence Prevention grant.

“We believe this is going to encourage more people to join the fight with us, but also empower those who are already doing the work,” One Lexington Director Devine Carama said.

Non-profits have until Friday, April 5th to apply to be considered to be a part of the city’s grant.
