Report: College boards heavy with Democrats

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — The boards at Kentucky’s largest public universities have more Democrats than they are supposed to, according to a published report.

According to an analysis by WFPL’s Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting (http://bit.ly/1NfhkIl), the board members overseeing the University of Kentucky, the University of Louisville and the Kentucky Community and Technical College System are overwhelmingly Democrats, many of whom donated to the election campaign of Gov. Steve Beshear.

The report comes eight years after Beshear settled a lawsuit filed against previous Gov. Ernie Fletcher for having too many Republicans on college boards. At the time, Beshear agreed to follow Kentucky’s law, which says collegiate boards should reflect the ratio of registered Democrats and Republicans in the state.

Beshear blamed the imbalances on an appointment process that also requires geographic and racial diversity.
