Reed Sheppard forgoes eligibility at UK, enters NBA draft

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – SEC Freshman of the Year in basketball Reed Sheppard says he’s entering the NBA Draft, and won’t be coming back to play for UK next season. Sheppard made the video announcement on X account.

“Playing basketball at the University of Kentucky was a huge part of my dream. I am so thankful to wear the blue and white jersey that represents my family, my friends and the hard-working faithful fans of the Big Blue Nation.”

It’s the announcement many of those faithful fans dreaded, after the Wildcats lost in the first round of the NCAA tournament, and the departure of former head coach John Calipari to Arkansas.

Sheppard thanked the BBN for their support, but said playing in the NBA is also part of his career dream.

“I believe it is time to pursue that dream, therefore, I will be entering my name into the NBA Draft, today.”

Sheppard is expected by many experts to be a lottery pick in the draft.
