Record numbers attend 50th Annual Governor’s Prayer Breakfast

FRANKFORT, Ky. (WTVQ) – The 50th annual Governor’s Prayer Breakfast had a record turnout Tuesday morning with close to 1000 people in attendance.

Leaders in government and ministry and members of the local community gathered at the Frankfort Convention Center.

The theme for Tuesday’s prayer breakfast is ‘United We Stand’. The Governors office says the annual event is an opportunity to unite Kentuckians of all faiths, backgrounds and parties to pray for the commonwealth,  its leaders and its future.

Tuesday also marked the first time Governor Matt Bevin hosted the prayer breakfast. “If in all our ways we acknowledge him, he will direct our paths,” said Governor Bevin. “I want you to know as the Governor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky that is my prayer for Kentucky.”

Crowds in attendance heard from Keynote speaker, University of Kentucky basketball Coach John Calipari. Throughout his speech, Calipari reflected on his successful career and the importance of putting into the action the principles of his faith.

“When you make your life about others it becomes way easier,” said Calipari. “When you’re just in a grab for what you can get, it’s really hard and lonely.”

Other speakers including Lieutenant Governor Jenean Hampton took moments to talk to the crowd about how much prayer is important in their lives and work.

Musical selections were also performed by University of Kentucky’s Acoustikats and reigning Miss Kentucky, Clark Davis.

“Prayer is so important,” said Davis. “I think we forget about it so often. You go to church and your hear your sermon, but I think one of the most important things is that personal connection to God.”
