Recess Rehab: Madison County school gets playground upgrades

RICHMOND, Ky. (WTVQ) – There may still be a few weeks of summer vacation left but there is a lot going on at Daniel Boone Elementary in Madison County.

The school is going through a major renovation and so is the playground, but the playground wasn’t part of the original plan.

Second grade teacher Jill VanDyke says her students might have a bad day in math or English but they can’t fail on the playground. So when one of her students asked why the others schools had better playgrounds, she knew it was time for an upgrade.

VanDyke has spent about the past two years planning for the playground improvements this summer. She applied for, and was awarded, grants from Lowe’s and Khols. She has teamed up with the school parent-teacher association, PTA, for fundraisers and to get community donations. Through all the hard work, the more than seven thousand dollar playground renovations will be completely paid for.

The playground will be a new geodome, shaded areas and soccer goals. VanDyke is also hoping for a fresh coat of paint and one day a garden for the students.

Students, parents, teachers and volunteers spent Wednesday working on the playground and there is another volunteer day planned for early August.
