Real ID enforcement begins

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) —New federal travel and facility access requirements are in effect as part of the Real ID enforcement. That means if you’re flying within the U.S. or planning to visit secure federal buildings like military bases or the White House, you’ll now need a Real ID or another federally accepted form of identification.

In Kentucky, Real IDs feature a black star in the top right corner. According to the state, about 36% of eligible Kentuckians — more than one million people — have already upgraded their licenses.

Governor Andy Beshear says long lines are still being reported at regional driver licensing offices. But there’s no need to rush if you already have another compliant ID.

“If you have a passport, you don’t need to rush out right now while the lines are as long as they can be,” Gov. Beshear said. “You’ll still be able to use that passport to fly and to get a Real ID at a later date.”

Other acceptable documents include a military ID, a passport card, and a Veteran Health Identification Card.

A four-year Real ID license costs $24, while an eight-year license costs $48. Appointments can be made at drive.ky.gov.
