Rally Held To Draw Attention To “Maternity Care Crisis”

Hundreds rallied in Lexington on Labor Day to improve birthing options.
The first annual "Rally to Improve Birth" took place in Triangle Park Monday morning.
Organizers said the rally was to draw attention to what they call a "maternal healthcare crisis" in the United States.
They said the U.S. has the highest maternity costs in the world but ranks 45th in maternal safety and that profits, convenience and liability concerns are often put before other safe, cost-effective alternatives like birthing centers and midwifery care.
"Things can be a lot better," said Christen Pascucci, vice president of ImprovingBirth.org. "We’ve got a one in three C-section rate in Lexington, actually a little higher than that, and that’s an indicator there’s some room for improvement."
The rally featured exhibitors including midwives, doulas, obstetricians and chiropractors.
Similar rallies were held in all 50 states Monday.
