Rally for Gynnya McMillen in Frankfort Thursday

FRANKFORT, Ky. (WTVQ) – Color of Change, a racial justice organization is making several demands of Governor Matt Bevin since the death of 16-year-old Gynnya McMillen.

McMillen was in custody at the Lincoln Village Detention Center in Elizabethtown when she died in January.

The group wants the detention center to be shutdown.

In March, autopsy results revealed that her death was related to an ‘irregular heartbeat’.

Investigators say hours before McMillen’s death, a restraint hold was used on the teen when she refused to remove her sweatshirt.

The hold was not a factor in her death, according to an autopsy.

Color of Change representatives say they have asked for the release of surveillance video for several months with no success.

The activists also claim the center’s staff failed to use proper resuscitation efforts.

According to state officials, both the Juvenile Justice Commissioner and an employee who did not perform bed checks were fired.

The organization says they want Bevin to take further action by firing Superintendent Michelle Grady and all staff involved.

The rally will begin a 1:30 pm at the Capitol rotunda in Frankfort Thursday.
