Radiologists encourage breast cancer screenings as October nears

WINCHESTER, Ky. (WTVQ) – Breast Cancer Awareness Month is coming up, so doctors are reminding people to start scheduling mammograms if they haven’t already.

According to the National Cancer Institute, breast cancer affects one in eight women during their lifetime.

It’s the second leading cause of cancer related death in women, but it is treatable. That’s why doctors suggest getting a screening.

Radiologists at Clark Regional Medical Center say mammograms are essential because they can show signs of cancer before it can be felt.

“They’re important because, in a lot of patients, they can find breast cancers much earlier than they would be found just on self-exam,” said Radiologist Ian Haycocks. “The smaller they are, most times they’re easier to treat and the more curable they are.”

Haycocks says it’s recommended that women over age 40 get a screening at least once per year.
