Public invited to hear about Maxey Flats site capping
HILLSBORO, Ky. (AP) — State officials are moving forward with plans to cap the Maxey Flats disposal site, a former disposal area for low-level radioactive waste in northeastern Kentucky.
The Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet says in a release that the public will have an opportunity to hear more information about the capping plans on Feb. 3 at the Kentucky National Guard center in Morehead.
State agencies have been working with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on the details of proper closure and long-term care of the site.
The final capping plan includes installation of a permanent vegetative cap and surface markers to identify buried waste. Construction is scheduled to begin this year and finish in 2016.
The site on the border of Rowan and Fleming counties operated from 1962 to 1977.
