Protesters march through downtown Lexington against EPA head Scott Pruitt
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ)- About a hundred people protested in Triangle Park because EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt was scheduled to speak to the Kentucky Association of Manufacturers at the Lexington Center.
EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt was scheduled to speak at this conference up until yesterday when he suddenly cancelled.
Many here believe it many be due to reports that President Trump will soon announce whether or not the us will be withdrawing from the Paris Climate Accord.
Either way Pruitt’s absence didn’t stop protesters from coming out here and speak out against him.
Members of the Sierra Club, Kentuckians for the Commonwealth and several other local environmental groups marched through the streets of downtown Lexington this afternoon criticizing Administrator Pruitt.
Protesters spoke out against the head of the EPA saying he is rolling back progress towards cleaner energy and even while Pruitt was not in Lexington to see their rally, protesters say they will not stop speaking out.
“We think he’s wrong both in Washington and his message here was a message we hoped Kentucky industry will not listen to. That they will listen to going forward not backward,” said Hank Graddy with the Sierra Club.
“I don’t think that has any affect. What we do in Kentucky is certain laws that are already that they were promulgated in the 70’s. You know the clean water act, safe drinking water act… and the clean air act. We implement all those regulations that we have. We implement those laws,” said Sec. Charles Snavely, of Kentucky’s Energy and Environment cabinet.
Pruitt was replaced by Sec. Snavely at the conference.
In addition to the Paris Accord the secretary was asked how big of an impact he thought the current EPA administration was having on the state of Kentucky and said the state and the EPA have a good working relationship.
