Protesters gather before County Clerk’s office
MOREHEAD, Ky. (WTVQ) – Protesters have gathered on Tuesday, at the Rowan County Clerk’s Office to object to the announcement that the office would no longer be issuing marriage licenses to anyone.
County Clerk Kim Davis cited her Christian faith for the decision, saying that it forbid her from acknowledging gay marriage. She said she will hold this stance regardless of the Supreme Court’s ruling last Friday, or the governor’s directive to clerks that they must issue marriage license to all couples.
On a related note, a petition was started on Change.org, asking her to consider resigning from office, saying; "As a County Clerk, it is not her job to impose her religious views on others, but to uphold the law regardless of whether or not she agrees with it. If her religious views conflict with her government job to such a great extent, it would be the responsible decision for Kim Davis to resign from office"
The Rowan County Clerk is one of a handful across Kentucky who decided to defy the ruling.
