Proposal Filed to Give Volunteer Firefighters Tax Credit
On Friday, Representative Michael Meredith (R-Brownsville) said he planned on filing legislation for the 2014 Regular Session to provide a tax credit to any certified volunteer firefighter in the state.
Under House Bill 186, volunteer firefighters certified by the Commission on Fire Protection Personnel Standards and Education would qualify for a refundable tax credit of $1,000 starting on January 1, 2015.
Eligibility would require firefighters to be certified for the entire taxable year.
Meredith filed similar legislation in 2012, but that bill did not receive a hearing.
