Power Out In Lexington Neighborhood After Crash

Crews in Lexington are working to repair a utility pole that was struck by a tractor trailer Wednesday morning.

Cliff Feltham, Kentucky Utilities Company media relations manager, said KU had to cut the power to around 450 homes while the pole at West Sixth Street and North Broadway as the pole was being replaced.

Lexington Police said the truck hit the pole around 9:05 a.m.

ABC 36 News captured sparks flying from what police called "live wires".

Residents around the area said they heard popping sounds and that their homes had power surges.

"I walked out to seeing the lines coming down and the electrical wires arching on the poles across the street. It’s like a war zone with all the popping and cracking and seeing the wires come down on our neighbor’s houses. It looked pretty bad," described Jim Clark, a man who lives near the accident.

Officers blocked off surrounding streets including Sixth Street from Headley Avenue to Toner Street.

They also directed traffic on Broadway from Third Street to Sixth Street because the traffic signals were out.

Kentucky Utility officials said they expect power to back by 3 or 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Police were asking drivers to avoid the area until then.

As of 1 p.m. some residents’ power has already been restored.
