Powell County Schools investigating alleged gun incident after football game
STANTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – Powell County Schools says an investigation is underway after an alleged gun incident during a middle school football game with Morgan County.
According to a release from Superintendent Sarah Wasson, the incident happened Thursday, September 11, when a fan on the Morgan County side of the field exchanged words with a Powell County volunteer helping with the chains. Wasson said the fan then waited outside the gate until one of the Powell County players exited and had words with him. As people were leaving, an incident occurred at the parking lot exit where the fan allegedly displayed a gun.
Wasson said she was notified by Morgan County’s superintendent the following day. She noted both districts and their school police chiefs are working together with Stanton City Police to investigate.
“Our School Police Chief is leading the investigation and working with the Stanton City Police as well as other county officials to fully investigate this incident and file appropriate charges,” Wasson wrote in the release. “We can’t communicate further about this incident, but we want our community to know that this type of behavior will not be tolerated.”
She added her thanks to Morgan County school leaders for their support, saying the focus remains on providing a safe environment for athletes, fans, and the community.
