Powell County Animal Shelter temporarily closes due to parvo case
POWELL COUNTY, Ky. — The Powell County Animal Shelter has announced a temporary closure following a confirmed case of parvo, a highly contagious viral disease that can be deadly for dogs. Shelter officials stated that the facility will not be accepting any new strays or surrenders for at least two weeks.
The decision comes after an entire litter of puppies was isolated when one of them was diagnosed with parvo. The disease is known for its severe gastrointestinal symptoms and high mortality rate, particularly in unvaccinated puppies.
In addition to addressing the parvo outbreak, the shelter is also facing issues of overcapacity. Shelter staff are working diligently to care for the affected puppies and prevent further spread of the disease within the facility.
