Possible case of bacterial meningitis in Lexington

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ)- A student has been hospitalized with a possible cause of bacterial meningitis.

University of Kentucky officials say they got work of the students hospitalization on Monday.

The case has not been confirmed nor has an exact strain of meningitis been determined; however, with bacterial meningitis being a serious and possibly fatal disease, officials are on high alert.

The area where the student lives is reportedly being thoroughly cleaned.

Those who may have had contact with the student are being monitored and provided information.

Anyone showing signs or symptoms of bacterial meningitis is urged to seek medical attention right away as it needs to be treated immediately.

Symptoms to watch out for include: a sudden onset of fever, headache, stiff neck, nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light and confusion.

Symptoms can appear suddenly or over the span of several days.
