Poor People’s Campaign denied access to Capitol

FRANKFORT, Ky. (WTVQ) – Activists from the Poor People’s Campaign flooded the Capitol Monday.

“I’ve been in the foster care system for 13 years. I feel like coming to events like this is not only standing up for myself, but really for everyone who’s disadvantaged,” said activist Brennan Faust.

Again, State Police met them at the door and didn’t allow them in.

Members of the group have had to follow a two in, two out rule for the last couple of weeks. According to the group, Monday they handed a list of demands to a Governor’s staffer, but couldn’t go any further.

Tanya Fogle said she was told she’d be arrested if she walked into the Governor’s office.

A spokesperson for the Kentucky State Police told the State Journal the Poor People’s Campaign did not have the correct permit to protest inside the Capitol. They added that “earlier incidents” such as protesters staying overnight, caused police to give them the two person rule.

“We even sent people inside this Capitol with just regular clothes on and the first question is ‘are you with the poor people’s campaign?” said Fogle.

The Poor People’s Campaign says that Representatives George Brown and Attica Scott have sent letters to Attorney General Beshear about allowing the group into the Capitol for future rallies.
