Police: Missing Berea teen could be in Ohio

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ)- Police in Berea say they wouldn’t describe a missing teen’s case as human trafficking based on what they know right now, but they do think 15-year-old Amber Renae Wagers could have been taken out of the state.

Police say the teen walked out of school Wednesday at 10 a.m. to meet with someone she may have met online.

“It’s definitely troubling,” Lt. Jake Reed said.

Reed says she may have left intentionally, but she’s a kid and her parents are worried.

Reed says soon after leaving school she sent a message to a friend. It asked for help from police and said Wagers was possibly being taken to Ohio.

“This case is not something we see every day, but it’s also not unique. I mean this kind of thing happens all the time all over the country,” Reed said.

Is it a case of human trafficking? Reed says based on what officers know right now it’s not.

“Once we locate her and we talk to her and we find out exactly who this person is there are a lot of possibilities that could happen,” Reed said.

Off camera, some of her classmates told me they’re surprised she chose to leave school.
They described her as quiet and always kind. They told me they were still getting texts and snapchats from her number Thursday morning. They just don’t know if it’s her.

The Superintendent sent out a letter to parents explaining what had happened.

Reed urges parents to know what kind of social media sites their kids are on and how they’re interacting with people on those sites.

“It can be a very dangerous thing. It’s part of our every day lives now, but it’s something that we have to be aware of,” Reed said.

Investigators have received a lot of new information on the case, but Reed encourages you to call with anything that could help ((859) 986-8456). He says Wagers might be in a white Chevy Malibu.
