Police: Man throws down loaded gun near officers

LONDON, Ky. (WTVQ) – A shot was fired at some officers in London but not because someone pulled the trigger. Police say it’s because someone threw down a loaded gun near them.

According to the London Police Department, officers were responding to a call Tuesday about a man walking along KY 80 making obscene gestures and not wearing a shirt. They say they found the man, 34-year-old Kevin D. Lewis, at the Red roof Inn. When officers approached Lewis and asked to speak to him, he refused then pulled out a .38 caliber Derringer pistol from his pants pocket, pointed it at his head and started yelling at the officers, according to police.

Lewis continued to walk on Melcon Lane, approaching West Hal Rogers Parkway then towards Heritage Road with the firearm in his hand. Other officers arrived to help. Police say Lewis then went behind an Arby’s, where he climbed on the side of a semi-truck and pointed the gun at himself. They say he then threw the gun onto the road, causing it to discharge near the officers. No one was injured.

Lewis was taken into custody and charged with nine counts of first-degree wanton endangerment of a police officer, first-degree fleeing and evading police on foot, and resisting arrest.
