Police: Man Nearly Runs Down Federal Agent During Escape Attempt

A man who police said nearly ran over a federal agent while trying to escape from authorities is scheduled to be arraigned in court Wednesday.

Clarence Engles, 61, has been in the hospital since the incident last Wednesday after a car crash ended his run from police.

According to the police citation, officials tried to arrest Engles on a felony warrant when they spotted him on Elm Tree Lane.

When he was asked to exit his vehicle, police said he threw the car in reverse and almost hit an agent with the Bureau of Alochol, Tobacco and Firearms.

Officials didn’t chase after him, but police said he kept driving.

Police said he eventually crashed head-on into a vehicle at the intersection of 5th Street and Martin Luther King Boulevard.

A woman was hurt in the crash.

Police said another person had to jump out of the way of Engles’ car during the chase when it hit a house.

He is now charged with two counts of wanton endangerment, assault and fleeing and evading.
