Police investigating two New Year’s Day shootings

Lexington, Ky (WTVQ): A violent start to the new year as police are investigating two overnight shootings on New Year’s Day, Police say there were two separate shootings early Monday morning on New Year’s, one at around 2 a.m. on West Main Street where a woman was shot. Police say she showed up at the hospital a short time later. The other happened around 3:45 a.m. on Linton Road. Police say a man was taken to the hospital. both are expected to be OK.

According to the Lexington Police Crime data, in 2021 there were 135 shootings, then in 2022 119, and last year that number went down to 82. Pastor Keith Tyler attributes the decrease to community involvement.

Tyler has called the Marlboro Park Community home for 25 years. “You can have any other corner in Kentucky, but you can’t have this corner,” he said. “I use that statement to imply, infer, and suggest this is the corner where I raise my family,”

Tyler says he feels safe in this area, but that doesn’t mean violence won’t happen. “What is destroying our community more than any other-ism is I don’t care-ism,” he said. “I do not believe that this is a spear head or if you would a kick off to a devastating year.”

“Often times in this particular area most of the shootings or any acts of violence is normally not associated with the residents in the community,” Tyler said. “You have a lot of people that will and are standing up for this community.”
