Police increasing police presence near UK campus

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Lexington Police say they are increasing patrols in the evenings, Thursday through Sunday, near the University of Kentucky campus.

Officers say they can’t tell the public how many more patrols will be in the area, just that they will have a larger presence on the Limestone and Maxwell corridors.

They say this is in response to the shooting death last Friday of student Jonathan Krueger, 22.  Krueger was shot on East Maxwell near Transylvania Park.

Police say the area is typically safe and one neighbor agrees.  Justin Morrell has lived in a house on East Maxwell for years and says he thinks the shooting was a one-time incident. "I feel like we have an adequate police force in Lexington, really above average.  I feel like our police force is very well-trained," says Morrell.  "I don’t think anything that happened over the past week in Lexington has to do with the police presence in Lexington."

Police say when they have a stronger presence it deters crime.
