Police department gives safety tips

GEORGETOWN, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — The Georgetown Police Department is urging drivers to use extra caution on wet roads as rain moves through Central Kentucky.

In a reminder posted this week, officers advised motorists to slow down, use low-beam headlights, and avoid cruise control when driving in rainy weather. Police say these simple steps can prevent hydroplaning and help keep everyone safe.

If a vehicle begins to hydroplane, drivers should ease off the gas and steer gently in the direction they want to go — rather than making sudden movements that could cause a skid.

Officers also recommend sticking to middle lanes where water is less likely to collect, avoiding standing water, and increasing following distance to allow extra stopping time.

Police emphasize that if conditions become too dangerous, drivers should safely pull over and wait for the storm to pass, reminding everyone that “safety comes first.”
