Police: Berea woman takes officers on high-speed pursuit with child in car

BEREA, Ky. (WTVQ) — A Berea woman is accused of taking Kentucky State Police on a high-speed pursuit into Garrard County while her child was in the backseat of her car last week.

According to an arrest citation, Laila Winfield was stopped on Chestnut Street in Berea for only having on working taillight on Friday, Oct. 20 around 7 p.m. She was also allegedly not wearing a seatbelt.

Winfield fled in her car during the traffic stop, heading toward Paint Lick, KSP said. She was also driving 70 mph in a 55 mph zone and continued driving “erratic” speeds.

While a trooper tried to stop Winfield again during the pursuit, she allegedly struck his vehicle.

The pursuit eventually ended around 7:57 p.m. and Winfield was arrested.

As she was being removed from the vehicle, troopers saw her son in the backseat “not properly buckled in a booster seat.”

She’s charged with speeding 15 mph over the limit, no tail lamps, disregard/fail to yield right of way and reckless driving.
