Police: Another arrest in gang recruitment case
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Police say they have made yet another arrest in a criminal gang recruitment case in Lexington. Authorities say their investigation began last September, after a gang initiation beating at Whitney Young Park.
Police say Corey Lee Chenault along with at least 11 other suspects participated in a gang initiation ritual that involved beating a recruit for a total of five minutes. Investigators say it all happened during a sporting event at the park. According to court documents, children and adults were disturbed by the group’s actions and called police.
Investigators say the beating is a ritual of the Chicago-based gang, the Black P. Stones. Court documents reveal in order to become a member recruits have to be beaten by other members. Police told abc 36 that gang activity is not as frequent in this area as in other major cities, but the Black P. Stones are recognized as an active gang in Lexington.
At least eight other arrests have been made in this case so far. Chenault is charged with criminal gang recruitment and is scheduled to appear in court Thursday.
