Pikeville to unveil statue to honor former Gov. Paul Patton

PIKEVILLE, Ky. (AP) – Former Kentucky Gov. Paul Patton is being honored with a statue in his eastern Kentucky hometown.

The Lexington Herald-Leader (http://bit.ly/29OCYLF ) reports Pikeville Main Street Program Director Minta Trimble announced Friday that a 9-foot, bronze statue of Patton will be unveiled at a July 26 ceremony.

Patton, a Democrat who was governor from 1995 to 2003, says he is “pleased and honored” by the move.

The statue will be located in front of the 99 iconic steps symbolizing opportunity that lead up to the University of Pikeville, where Patton was president from 2010 to 2013.

The 79-year-old will be depicted in an academic robe.

Trimle says the statue cost about $70,000, with no tax dollars being involved.
