‘Picnic with the Police’ Saturday at Douglass Park

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Lexington Police and the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Human Rights Commission are teaming up to put on an event designed to strengthen community relations.

‘Picnic with the Police’ is scheduled for Saturday, May 20, 2017, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Douglass Park.

The Human Rights Commission says studies have shown that communities need routine opportunities for people of many different backgrounds to have dialogue with each other and with the police.

Organizers feel this event will lead to better relationships, more equitable treatment by the police, greater police responsiveness and accountability, along with a greater willingness by residents to work with the police.

Lexington Chef Love Talley says he will feed everyone who comes to the event for free. He says he expects up to 2,500 people during the three-hour event.
