Phone scam warning in Laurel County

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ) – The Laurel County Sheriff’s Office is warning people about a phone scam.

The sheriff says a man has been calling people saying that they have won a trip or a prize or have accumulated points for a prize.

Deputies say the phone number appears to be a local number, but it is not.

They say scammers are now using technology called “spoofing” in which they can program any phone number to appear on your caller ID, making it look like the phone number is local and from someone legitimate, but it is not.

The sheriff says if you do not recognize the number calling you then don’t answer it.

They recommend that you let the caller leave a voice mail.
