Phone Scam Warning: Impersonating police
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) — Fayette County Sherriff’s office is warning Lexington residents to beware of a recent phone scam.
The caller is falsely claiming to be a Fayette County Deputy Sheriff, and is telling people that someone in the household has an unpaid fine – either due to an arrest warrant or missed grand jury appearance.
The caller then asks victims to purchase a pre-paid or re-loadable money card and tell the “Deputy” the card number over the phone, to settle the fine.
Police say this is both fraudulent, and not associated with the Office of Fayette County Sheriff in any fashion.
Officers would like to warn residents to be wary of calls that request personal information or payment over the phone.
The Fayette County Sherriff stated that they will never ask for money over the phone, and will not threaten arrest if you refuse to pay a fine.
