Pets have a place to go during emergencies

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) — Lexington Humane Society, Division of Emergency Management, and Lexington-Fayett Animal Care and Control worked together to procure two trailers with animal sheltering and care equipment.

“As we’ve seen in other communities, many people refuse to leave their homes for a shelter during emergencies because shelters usually cannot accommodate pets. That can be dangerous,” said Mayor Grey “Now, Lexington has two trailers to provide temporary shelter for dogs and cats during a declared emergency.”

The newest trailer is a portable kennel, with 40 cages to house small to medium-size pets. Powered with its own generator, the trailer is heated and air conditioned, with an onboard water supply, sink, and holding tank for proper disposal of wastewater. The kennels are also easily washed and sanitized after each use, say Lexington Humane Society officials.

The Humane society says they will be using the trailer for larger adoption events, and that they look forward to using it to promote adoption as the best option when looking for a new pet.
