Perry County to connect Fort Branch homes to water system

HAZARD, Ky. (AP) — Perry County officials say residents of an eastern Kentucky town will no longer have to rely on water from a well.

WYMT-TV reports (http://bit.ly/1FUMcbs ) that the county recently received approval for a $489,000 Community Development Block Grant that will allow more than 50 Fort Branch homes to be connected to a clean municipal water service. Fort Branch is located about 15 miles southeast of Hazard.

For years, Fort Branch residents have received water from a well. Despite filtration efforts, residents say the water is still sometimes too contaminated to use.

County judge Scott Alexander says securing funding for the Fort Branch water project has taken more than a decade.

Alexander says work to connect area residents with the county water system should begin within the next two or three months.
