Parents charged with abuse after death of infant

CARROLLTON, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky State Police have charged a mother and father with abuse after the death of their 4-day-old infant.

Police arrested 33-year-old Jarod Martin and 29-year-old Lisa Payton on Wednesday and charged them with first-degree criminal abuse.

Martin and Payton were taken into custody at Carroll County Memorial Hospital, where police say they had taken the boy after he stopped breathing.

According to a police report cited by media, Payton told officers that she dropped her son while under the influence of drugs.

Carroll County Coroner David Wilhoite told media that autopsy results didn’t find evidence that the baby had been beaten.

Police spokesman Endre Samu says the charges are based on the mother’s statements and visible injuries to the infant’s forehead and the top of his head.

A court clerk said there’s no record of an attorney for either parent.
