Palestinian Community speaks out during Urban County Council Meeting
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) — During Thursday’s Lexington Fayette-Urban County Council meeting, members of the Palestinian community stood up to make their voices heard during public comments, but also to ask the council for a resolution, condemning the violence and war crimes in Gaza.
“Supporting a ceasefire, sets the stage for a ripple effect in the hearts and minds of individuals influencing not only the legislators and leaders within our region but also extending to neighboring cities and states. This has the potential to bring about genuine impacts and usher in real change,” says Ala Hassan who was in attendance, Hassan is Palestinian.
As they took turns, their main goal, asking for a resolution.
“This resolution, a testament to the collective voice of our community signifies a needed call for justice and humanitarian action. It is a reflection of our shared commitment to standing against the injustices faced by the people of Gaza,” added Sajida Megariaf.
After public comments, the meeting was adjourned.
“What can you do as a city council? You can use your voices to say no more to set an example to make people feel safe speaking out about at a time when censorship is at an all time high, it should not be radical to call for human rights. It’s been 60 days. No more standing here convincing you of our humanity. It’s time you convince us of yours,” added Sophia Shalash.
The next council meeting is on Thursday before their winter recess.
