Paducah residents say electric bills too high
PADUCAH, Ky. (AP) — Paducah residents upset over costly electric rates are receiving little assurance that their bills would be going down in the near future.
Electric utility officials spoke at the city commission meeting last week, and the public was given a chance to ask questions.
Vicky Holland, a single mother of two, says her electric bills have been $900 a month and she needed extra jobs over the winter to pay them.
The Paducah Sun reports (http://bit.ly/1pdtUe8 ) the local electric utility, Paducah Power System, has a contract for electricity from the Prairie State Energy Campus. The southwestern Illinois power plant was funded by municipalities like Paducah but ended up costing about $4 billion to develop, about twice the original estimate.
Paducah residents pay some of the highest electricity rates in the state.
