Orem, UT (KUTV/CNN) – A video from the Orem Police Department is going viral after an officer took on a very rambunctious two-year-old girl who was waiting for her father in the court house lobby.
Orem Police Officer Kevin Norris was going to testify in a traffic court case last Wednesday when he noticed a toddler waiting in the lobby with her father. The parent, Jose Moncayo, was unable to find a babysitter so he brought his daughter, Abi, to court with him.
When it was time for the father to enter to court room for his case he tried to take his daughter with him. However, children aren’t allowed in the court room.
Officer Norris, who was sitting nearby, offered to babysit.
“I’ve got kids myself,” Norris told 2News. “I know what it is to have rambunctious kids, and it’s hard to take them anywhere.”
That little girl quickly took the six-foot-six officer around his finger. He is seen in court house surveillance video walking the toddler around, getting drinks of water and treats for her from other deputies, according to Orem Police Department.
Officer Norris even went as far as to pull out some cartoons on his cell phone. That’s when the little girl settled down, climbed on his lap and quickly fell asleep on the officer’s lap.
“Kids love videos, they love movies, so we just threw some cartoons on my phone and she was out before we knew it,” Norris said.
Moncayo, the girl’s father, was pleasantly surprised and said the officer did a “good job.”
Officer Norris may now be known as the big, friendly babysitter. He said he’s OK with that.
“We’re not just officers who are out there to arrest people,” he said. “We’re out there to make our community a better place.”
