1-year-old continues journey to recovery after liver transplant
WINCHESTER, Ky. (WTVQ) — A parent’s worst nightmare is seeing their child sick and their condition getting worse unless they receive an organ transplant.
But nowadays, it’s more and more of a reality with more than 25% of children who wait for an organ transplant under 5 years old.
In August we brought you the story of Evelyn Marcum who was diagnosed with a rare condition that had her needing a liver transplant.
Evelyn, who’s not even 1 year old, but months after receiving her transplant she’s back at home and is happier than ever.
“I’m so grateful,” said Nicole Marcum, Evelyn’s mother who reflects on her daughter’s journey.
Evelyn and her family are back home in Winchester, continuing with her recovery.
“She’s in therapies right now because she is developmentally delayed because she was in the hospital so much,” adds Marcum.
Evelyn’s mother, Nicole, added that the hardest part of her family was the uncertainty.
“She’s learning how to walk, she’s learning how to eat, she’s doing all these things as a one-year-old that another infant would have already kind of figured out by now,” she said.
Despite being behind on what Evelyn should know, the fact she’s still alive is what matters to her mother and family.
“I hope that Evelyn always remembers how strong she is,” says Nicole.
