One year after tragedy; Scott County celebrates life and legacy of Deputy Caleb Conley
GEORGETOWN, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — As the Scott County Sheriff’s Office continues mourning the loss of one of their own, a year ago, on Wednesday the department gathered together with those in the community to have a celebration of life for Deputy Caleb Conley.
“We miss him every day,” Scott County Sheriff, Tony Hampton reflects on the last year, after losing one of their own.
It’s been one of the toughest years for the Scott County Sheriff’s Office, Wednesday marked a year since the loss of Deputy Caleb Conley who was shot and killed during a traffic stop.
As the community gathered to celebrate the life and legacy of Deputy Conley, the sheriff’s office is grateful for the support of the community.
“Although what happened is very unfortunate, and we hate it. We’ve got to pick up and keep working and keep doing our job, and that’s what Caleb would would want,” added Hampton.
Those who knew him best, describe deputy Conley as a great man, an even better person and dedicated to his family.
“It still seems surreal that he’s gone,” added William Clogston, a friend of Conley who also worked with him.
The celebration of life for deputy Conley brought together the community he loved and cherished.
“It’s a brotherhood, whether you wear brown, blue or gray. We all love each other at the end of the day, and really, I mean, we have to work together and we need to work together for this community,” said Hampton as he reflects on the love for the badge and his brothers.
In an effort to continue the legacy and memory of Deputy Conley, his wife Rachel established the Caleb Conley Foundation.
“The money is going to go to a fallen or injured first responders and their families. That is that is exactly where all of the money goes to, to help support those families. For the long haul, not just immediately, but over time,” said Amanda Nettles, who helps with the foundation and was also a friend of Conley.
And while Conley may be gone physically, those at the department make sure his spirit is very much alive.
“When you lose someone, like everybody says it gets easier with time, it doesn’t, you just learn, you just deal with it,” added Clogston, as he recalls the memories with Deputy Conley.
The man accused of killing Deputy Conley, Steven Sheangshang is expected back in court in July.
