One-on-One with Scott County Schools superintendent

SCOTT COUNTY, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – As the new school year kicks off across Kentucky, more than 10 counties, including Scott and Fayette, are welcoming students back to the classroom. ABC 36 recently sat down with Scott County Public Schools Superintendent Billy Parker to discuss what to expect this year, highlighting significant developments within the district.

One of the major changes for Scott County is the opening of a new building for Scott County High School. Superintendent Parker gave ABC 36 a tour of the state-of-the-art facility, which he says will offer enhanced resources and opportunities for students.

In addition to the new building, high school students in Scott County will have access to a new program called the 4-T Academy. This initiative, developed in partnership with Toyota, aims to provide students with a direct pathway to careers in manufacturing, offering them valuable skills and training for the future.

Like many districts nationwide, Scott County has faced challenges related to the ongoing teacher and bus driver shortage. However, Superintendent Parker confirmed that all teaching and bus driver positions are currently filled ahead of the first day. Despite this, he acknowledged that certain sectors remain difficult to staff fully.

“When I think about last year at this time versus this year, it’s a bit more challenging to fill those positions,” Parker said.

The new high school building and the 4-T Academy come as Scott County Schools, which now enrolls over 10,000 students, anticipates continued growth in the coming years.

ABC 36 will provide a deeper look into the changes coming to the Scott County district later today. Additionally, this week, we’ll hear from a Fayette County Public School leader as they prepare for the start of their school year.
