UPDATE: 73-year-old man dies in head-on Knox County crash

Accident happened just before 8:30 a.m. in Knox County


BAILEY SWITCH, Ky. (WTVQ) – On November 3, 2021 at approximately 8:30 a.m.  Kentucky State Police, Post 10 Harlan received a call about a two-vehicle collision on Ky 229 in the Bailey Switch community of Knox County. Trooper Sammy Faris along with Detectives from Post 10 responded and began an investigation.

Initial investigation indicates 73-year-old Barton Smith, of Barbourville, was traveling north on Ky 229 when his 2010 silver Toyota Corolla dropped off the right side of the road. Smith’s car then crossed the center line into the south bound lane striking head on a Chevrolet Colorado pickup south driven by 58-year-old Phillip Jones, of London, troopers said, noting Jones was unable to avoid the Toyota Corolla.

Jones was transported from the scene to Baptist Health Corbin for minor injuries. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene by the Knox County deputy coroner. Both drivers had their seatbelts on at the time of the collision and drugs and alcohol are not suspected, troopers said.

The crash is under investigation by Det. Rodney Sturgill. Also assisted at the scene were Knox County Sheriff’s Dept, Knox County Deputy Coroner and Bailey Switch Fire Department.

KNOX COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ) – Emergency crews are working a fatal accident in Knox County that has claimed the life of at least one person and is disrupting traffic.
According to Knox County authorities and WRIL radio, a short time before 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, emergency responders responded to a three-vehicle crash on Highway 229 four miles from Highway 25E in Knox County. One individual has died, according to the report.
Bailey Switch Fire Department, Knox County EMS, Knox County Sheriff’s Department and Kentucky State Police have responded.
The roadway will be shutdown for some time as the investigation continues.
