Old Church Burns Down

A church that’s been standing since the 1800s in Bath County, burned down to the ground last night.

The local fire department believes the cause of the fire is suspicious and is investigating.

The building used to be the Salt Lick Methodist Church. It was a church from 1893 to about the 1960s and after that it was a storage space. Today, it’s a total loss and one neighbor is sad to see it gone.

“I just thought that was a piece of history from Salt Lick that’s gone,” said Robby Powell, Neighbor.

“There’s still a lot of history there and you hate to see something like this go down,” said Brent Frizzell, Salt Lick Fire Chief.

Three fire departments responded around 8:30pm and crews spent about four hours on scene.

There was some damage to the building across the street, old cars nearby, and power lines were cut off.

“The building with the age of it, it was basically a tinder box and it didn’t take long at all,” said Frizzell.

Frizzell says no one was hurt and no known valuables were lost.

Now, the fire department and state police will work together to investigate the cause of this fire.
