Officer Ellis remembered by the community
Officer Daniel Ellis died just before two Friday morning at UK Hospital after being shot in Richmond Wednesday morning. Police say he was investigating a robbery.
Officials tell us that Raleigh Sizemore is responsible for shooting Ellis.
It was a long heart breaking day in Madison County but the community showed their love for Ellis.
On Friday the community came together in front of the Richmond Police Department to show their support and say good bye to Ellis. They stood by his police cruiser with heavy hearts and to show their thankfulness. They say he made the ultimate sacrifice.
A woman that lives in Richmond said “ I know thank you isn’t enough but thank you for taking your time and your time and your energy to protect us community members and to keep everyone safe.”
Timothy Searp says, “ The small things that count when you have an officer that’s gone in the line of duty and he’s just doing his job.”
“It’s a really sad time.. really somber time but yet you’re seeing people pulling together and coming together, said Annette Roe.
His brothers and sisters in law enforcement never left his side. They escorted him from the medical examiner’s office in Frankfort to his home in Richmond. Strangers lined the streets because they are grateful for all he’s done.
Annette Roe said, “ Your heart always goes out to anybody that’s went through something like this for a fallen police officer who protects you and puts your life on the line for you, you just want to pay respect for that.”
So together in heartbreak they will honor Officer Ellis.
