Richmond officer dies after shooting

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Richmond Police Officer Daniel Ellis has died after being shot in the line of duty on Wednesday.

Ellis was pronounced dead at University of Kentucky Hospital early Friday morning. He had been listed in critical condition since the shooting.

Ellis had been pursuing a lead on an armed robbery suspect when he entered a bedroom of a home on Ballard Drive in Richmond and was shot in the head, state police say.

Another officer with Ellis fired back and hit the suspect, Raleigh Sizemore, state police say.

After Sizemore was treated for gunshot wounds, he was arrested and charged with attempted murder of a police officer on Wednesday. State police say that charge will now be upgraded to murder of a police officer.

Two other people were inside the apartment at the time of the shooting, Gregory Ratliff and Rita Creech. They were also arrested on Wednesday. Ratliff was charged with complicity to commit murder of a police officer. Creech was charged with robbery.

An autopsy will be performed on Friday.

Ellis leaves behind his wife and son.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
