“Off-grid” couple fighting to regain custody of children

GARFIELD, Ky. (AP) — A judge has declined to allow a Kentucky couple who blog about their "off-the-grid" lifestyle to regain custody of their 10 children.

Deputies removed Nicole and Joe Naugler’s children from their home on May 6 following a confrontation between Nicole Naugler and a Breckinridge County sheriff’s deputy. The deputy went to the Nauglers’ home to conduct a welfare check for Child Protective Services and decided to remove the children.

The Naugler’s 27-acre homestead is constructed under tarps and has no wired electricity, no running water and no toilets. The children do not attend formal schools.

WAVE-TV (http://bit.ly/1R0Knlo) reports the couple’s attorney, Rick Hardin, declined to provide details about Monday’s hearing because the case involves juveniles.

Another custody hearing will be held in June.
