“Off-grid” couple faces hearing to regain child custody

GARFIELD, Ky. (AP) — A couple who blog about their "off-the-grid" lifestyle faces a hearing Monday to regain custody of their 10 children after Child Protective Services put them into foster care.

WAVE-TV (http://bit.ly/1EW55NO ) reports deputies removed Nicole and Joe Naugler’s children from their home Wednesday following a confrontation between Nicole Naugler and a Breckinridge County sheriff’s deputy. A deputy who went to the Nauglers’ home to conduct a welfare check for Child Protective Services took Nicole Naugler into custody and charged her with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. Another confrontation over water on Sunday prompted a criminal summons for Joe Naugler on a charge of menacing.

The Naugler’s 27-acre homestead is constructed under tarps and has no wired electricity, no running water and no toilets. The children do not attend formal schools.
