Off-Duty Firefighter Helps Neighbor During House Fire

An off-duty Lexington Firefighter helped his neighbors Saturday morning when their house caught fire.

According to the fire department, Captain Brian Dawson was raking leaves in his yard when he saw thick smoke a few houses down.

Dawson went down the street to look at it and said he saw his neighbor trying to put the fire out with a garden hose – and then go back inside the home.

Firefighters said Dawson went inside without any gear.

"The smoke was thick and black and you couldn’t see anything," said Dawson.

He said he found his neighbor by touch and helped her escape the burning home.

Crews then arrived on the scene and put out the fire. They said there was a lot of damage to the home.

One patient was treated for smoke inhalation on the scene. The other was taken to the hospital for treatment. Fire fighters said they should recover.
