North Carolina domestic violence suspect identified in Lexington officer-involved shooting

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — New details are emerging about the man shot by police this week during a traffic stop that shut down Alumni Drive near Yellowstone Parkway.

According to a release from the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office, the suspect has been identified as 40-year-old Brooks Janzen Plemmons of Clemmons.

Investigators in North Carolina say they began working the case earlier this week after responding to a domestic-related aggravated assault report at a hospital. After speaking with the victim and reviewing what happened over several days, deputies say they established probable cause and obtained multiple felony warrants for Plemmons.

Authorities say those charges include firearm possession by a convicted felon, assault by strangulation, first-degree kidnapping, discharging a weapon into an occupied home, habitual misdemeanor assault, interfering with emergency communications, and assault by pointing a gun.

North Carolina officials say Plemmons was later located in Lexington on Tuesday, where he was shot by officers with the Lexington Police Department during an attempted traffic stop.

As previously reported, police say officers had been tracking Plemmons’ vehicle after confirming he had active nationwide felony warrants. When officers tried to stop the vehicle near Alumni Drive and Yellowstone Parkway, three officers fired toward the car. A gun was found near the suspect.

Plemmons was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. No officers were hurt.

The Kentucky State Police Critical Incident Response Team is handling the investigation into the shooting, while Lexington police will also conduct an internal review.
